A garment steamer works faster than an iron. If you are using a handheld steamer like the Rowenta X-Cel Steam, it is even more convenient. Many people use it for quick touch-ups when they are in a hurry. But when you are rushing, that is when you tend to become a little careless. As a result, your hand might get accidentally burnt by the steam the garment steamer emits.
My hand used to get scalded this way in the past when I was using a steamer to erase wrinkles on my clothes. When I did get a little fussier and wanted my shirt to look better in a hurry, the steam may get too close to my hand that was holding the shirt tautly. Since my attention was all focused on the wrinkles, I ended up getting hot steam on my hand a few times this way.
Towards the end life of my clothes steamer, it started to sputter water every now and then too. Needless to say, a few droplets would occasionally land on my hand. Although they were not too painful, they were still hot enough to be a discomfort. Whether it is steam or hot water droplets, there is a way to avoid burning your hand while steaming your clothes. The answer is a garment steamer glove.

Gloves for steaming or ironing clothes are an effective solution to avoid burning your hand. Why? Because they are insulated to prevent steam from penetrating and getting onto your hands. While you can also use your oven mitt, it may not be waterproof and work well to prevent steam penetration. The color may also run if it gets wet and you might stain your clothes as a result when you hold it with the mitt on.
On the other hand, garment steamer gloves tend to have waterproof and insulating fabric. They may also be longer to protect not only your hand but also your wrist and forearm.
The other good thing about putting this on is that you can place your gloved hand underneath the fabric, right at the spot where you are steaming to smooth it over with the steam head. You can’t do that with your bare hand but you can with a garment steamer ironing glove.
Protecting Your Hand While Ironing
While this type of gloves is designed more for steaming, you can also put it on for ironing. Nowadays, the best steam irons also have a generous amount of steam output, especially the Rowenta irons. If you are clumsy or like smoothing the fabric while ironing, a glove will help to prevent scalds and burns from the soleplate and steam emission.
The other garment care appliance that tends to burn your hands is the steam press. Due to the narrow opening between the board and the heat plate, many people experienced getting the back of their hands scalded by the latter as they adjust their clothes to be pressed. A pair of garment steamer gloves might help to prevent this from happening.
The only problem with the steam press though is that you need to adjust your clothes to ensure it is totally flat before you press down the heat plate. Wearing gloves to do that might be a little difficult since it makes you clumsy with the thick padding. You could manage with some garments but it might not be possible for those that require more detailed adjustments to lay them flat on the board.
Overall, a garment steamer ironing glove would work best for steaming clothes. Even if you don’t tend to get steam burns, you will still find it useful to be able to place your gloved hand beneath the fabric that you are steaming. It is not needed as much for ironing unless you have a habit of getting scalded by a steam iron. It may or may not work for a steam press but I think it is still worth a try due to the high risk of scalding your hands against the hot plate.
