Maytag is not a very popular steam iron brand as they are more well-known for their washers and dryers. However, this has been changing in recent years. With more and more complaints about leaking irons even from premier brand names, people are more willing to try out other manufacturers. As long as they keep the prices reasonably affordable, the demand will be there. The Maytag M400 review below will attempt to look at this steam iron in greater detail.

This is a steam iron with standard features. The soleplate is made of stainless steel and can achieve maximum heat in under a minute. With a fast heat on time, it also has a steam burst function for stubborn wrinkles. You just need to wait a mere 3 seconds in between one burst and another. The amount of steam can be adjusted via a controller that is located in between the spray mist and steam burst buttons. These functions are all within the reach of your thumb as you iron. There is also a self-cleaning button which is located at the side.
The Maytag M400 has a manual interface with a dial fabric selector under the handle. The handle itself has a soft grip for greater comfort. It also has a soft-touch heel for a gentler and more secure placement when you set it down to reposition your garments.
This model has a 360-degree swivel, tangle-free 8-foot cord. It comes with an 8-ounce water tank and 3-way auto shut-off for security.
Maytag M400 vs M800
There is not much difference between the Maytag M400 vs M800. The wattage, cord length, tank capacity, fabric selector and steaming features are all the same. Even the weight is about the same at 3 lbs.
The only major difference is that the Maytag M800 SmartFill has a removable water tank. The M400 doesn’t. A removable water tank just makes the refilling more convenient as you don’t have to bring the whole iron to the sink. You can just detach the water tank to fill it up while waiting for the iron to heat up. The other difference is the number of steam holes on the soleplate. The M800 has more steam holes compared to the M400.
Of course, you will have to pay more for the better features. This is why the M800 will cost you a bit more than the M400. At the time of this Maytag M400 review, the difference between the 2 models is about $8.
Should You Buy The Maytag M400?
Pros
- Heats fast – The claim is you can get this iron heated up to the maximum in 55 seconds. Many customers have complimented that it does get hot very quickly. This means less waiting time is needed each time you plug in your iron.
- Not pricey – This is not a $100 iron. You will pay way less than that for the MaytagM400. The price is comparable to the Shark irons which is in the range of $30 to $50.
- Few complaints of leaks – This is not to say that there are no complaints of leaks at all for this model but is minimal at this point. When almost all brands have recurring complaints about water leaks including the popular Rowenta irons, this is a refreshing change.
- Steady steam – The steam output is consistent and has enough of it to make ironing easy. It won’t steam as much as the Rowenta DW9280 Steam Force Iron but it is adequate to get the job done and acceptable for its price.
Cons
- Dark water tank – The color of the water tank makes it hard to see the water level. They could have chosen a more transparent tank like the Panasonic 360 Freestyle Iron.
- Low water capacity – Some people find the tank capacity to be on the low end. At 8 ounces, this is less than the Shark Ultimate Professional which has a 10-ounce capacity. So, be prepared to refill if you have a big ironing load.
- Dial gets bumped – The fabric dial selector is under the handle. Hence, when you grip it, you may bump the dial and accidentally change the settings. It is a common problem with mechanical interface iron. Unless you are willing to switch to an electronic interface like the Maytag M1200, this could be a potential problem whichever model that you choose to buy.
In terms of performance, there is nothing out of the ordinary about the Maytag M400. The steam is adequate but it can be improved, especially for the steam burst and vertical steaming function. It does the job well for the price but it won’t be able to match the steam and heat output of the high end models.

However, most buyers like it because the leaks and spits seem less of a problem compared to other irons. It is not that you will never get this problem but the chances are reduced. While writing up this Maytag M400 review, we have come across many positive feedbacks on this model that complimented it for its lack of leaks and spits which have become a norm for steam irons. So, with a very reasonable price given its quality, this is indeed one of the best irons under $50 and is worth a buy.
Patrice Marcks says
My Maytag 400 just spit rusty water on a white silk/cotton blouse. At least it was the last item in a big pile of ironing. It’s going in the trash. (I’ve had it for a couple of years and it has never had a problem before).
