You can give me the best Rowenta iron that money can buy and I would still hate ironing. I do it only because there is no other option unless I have money to spare for the dry cleaners. Otherwise, I will have to be prepared to wear wrinkled clothes every day. But there is this fantastic invention called wrinkle release spray for clothes. This is a solution that helps to get rid of wrinkles from fabrics by a simple act of spraying, tugging and hanging. No ironing or steaming is necessary. It is also a static cling remover, odor eliminator, and fabric freshener whcich makes it seems like a must-have.
It sure sounds very promising and the prospect of storing away the steam iron permanently suddenly looks very real. But am I jumping for joy a little too early? Does the wrinkle release spray work as well as it claims by the manufacturers?
What Is A Clothes Wrinkle Remover Spray?
Basically, it is a liquid solution that helps to relax the fibers of your fabric so that the wrinkles can be erased. The commercial wrinkle release sprays come in bottles with spray nozzles. You spray onto your clothes in a sweeping motion until it is damp. The general methods are to smooth your clothes out with your hands and tug out the wrinkles after spraying. Then, just leave it to dry with the drying time being as short as 5 to 10 minutes. The trick is not to overspray. The more you use, the longer it takes for your clothes to dry and it doesn’t necessarily improve the results.
Does It Work?
The short answer is yes and no. Yes, it takes out most of the wrinkles. There is a noticeable difference before and after using the instant wrinkle remover spray. But no, it won’t give you a completely smooth result on all garments as a steam iron does. In fact, you might still notice faint wrinkles on your clothes compared to none at all if you press it with a steam iron.
So, why do I still buy it? Because the difference before and after using the spray is pretty clear on most of my clothes. I’m not very fussy and I can live with faint wrinkles on my shirts. I also like the idea that I can smooth out my clothes if I’m in a hurry and don’t have the time to drag out the ironing board.
But I also have to say that I use it mainly for emergencies and quick fixes as well as touch ups. I also bring it for traveling rather than pack my travel iron along. The reason why I don’t use it as my steam iron replacement is because it is tiring to spray and smooth every single item out with my hand. If I have a pile of laundry to iron, it is probably more efficient to bring out the steam iron. At least, with the steam iron, I don’t have to go back and check the condition of the clothes after it is dry and re-apply another round of spray if the wrinkles are still present.
Hence, it works for me but not as a replacement for a clothes iron. If you read most of the Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus reviews that you can find online, you will see that many people are happy with the results that it gives. But at the same time, there will also be a portion of users that find it doesn’t work well at all. The reason is simple. We all have different standards of what is acceptable. Faint wrinkles all over a shirt may be acceptable to me but not to you. The kind of clothes that we tend to wear may also be different and obviously, a clothes wrinkle remover spray will work better on some fabrics better than others.
Would I Recommend A Wrinkle Release Spray?
Yes, I would recommend people to try this out. This is mainly because the cost is affordable and that makes it worthwhile to give it a try. You may like it or you may not. But the small cost makes this a low-risk purchase. The Real Simple Clean Wrinkle Release is a bio-based product which makes it a little bit more expensive. If you are just trying things out, you can always start with a small bottle of Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus.
If you have no iron at home right now and you wear all your clothes wrinkled, then a wrinkle remover would certainly be a game changer for you. You will see an improvement in how your clothes look which makes this is a good buy. But if you religiously iron all your clothes, this is still worth a try for lightly wrinkled clothes to help you cut down on the time spent ironing as well as quick fixes when you have no time to do the chore.
So, having made the recommendation, I would also remind you not to store away your steam iron just yet. Some people can replace it totally with a clothes wrinkle release spray but I doubt it will work for the majority of us. It can certainly eliminate the ironing task on certain days but there will still be many a day that you will need to bring out your ironing board and continue with the dreaded chore. There is just no escape, at least for now!
