For most of us, a laundry sorter is a must. You need to segregate your clothes before you dump them in the washer. A sorter just makes the process easier and more organized. However, it also takes up quite a bit of space especially if you get a triple bag sorter. The other large item that could pose a headache in terms of storage is an ironing board. So, why not combine the two instead? A laundry sorter with an ironing board on top seems like a perfect idea for saving space. But is it really? Are there any drawbacks to this design?

Shown here is the Seville Classics Mobile 3-Bag Heavy-Duty Laundry Hamper. There are quite a few of this type of laundry sorters around and they basically have the same design. The features you need to look out for when you are shopping for such a laundry sorter are:
- Size – Check the dimensions to make sure it fits the space that you have allocated for it. Different models will have slightly different measurements.
- Height – If you are planning to use the top as an ironing board, is it at a comfortable height for you to iron?
- Bag size – Find out the capacity of the bags. How much can they fit? Are they big enough to hold your usual laundry pile?
- Bottom support – Does it have a bottom panel to support the hamper bags from sagging?
- Frame – Does the frame look solid and sturdy? After all, it has to support the weight of 3 full bags of clothes and the pressure from ironing.
- Wheels – Are the wheels lockable? How big are they given the potential weight that they have to support?
Pros
The advantages of using a laundry sorter with ironing board are:
- Saves space – As mentioned, this is one of the space-saving ideas for the laundry room. It is an alternative to buying a large ironing board which many people are reluctant to do.
- Easy to move – Laundry sorters usually come with casters. This makes it highly mobile. You can wheel it next to a power outlet to do your ironing and then move it out of the way when you are done.
- Versatile – The top can also be used as a folding station for your clothes. If you are short of space, you can make use of it as a temporary shelf too. Unlike a regular ironing board which tends to get folded up, the flat top of a laundry sorter is always available for other uses when there is a need.
Cons
The drawbacks are:
- Not ideal – Obviously, this would not make the best ironing board that is most ideal for any ironing task. A regular ironing board will have one pointed end to make it easy to iron certain items of clothing. It also does not have any hooks at the bottom to snag your garment. A laundry sorter has hooks for the bags in which your clothes can get caught.
- Small – The work area for a standard ironing board is typically around 49 inches long. For a laundry sorter with an ironing top, you will be lucky if you can get one that measures close to 40 inches. A typical triple laundry sorter is about 30 to 35 inches long.
- Wobbly – This is a risk because the whole frame is sitting on casters. Usually, only two of them are lockable. So, it may still move as you iron.
- No iron holder – A regular ironing board will have an iron holder for you to place your steam iron. For a laundry sorter with an ironing board top, your iron will have to sit on the ironing surface itself because there is no holder available. This means you will have even less space to work on.
- Not height adjustable – You can’t adjust the height of the top surface to make ironing more comfortable.
Is A Laundry Sorter With Ironing Board Still A Good Idea?
Well, if you really don’t have the space to store a standard ironing board and you need a laundry hamper, this design offers a solution. You can iron on it and keep your laundry in the bags at the same time. It is not perfect and it has its cons but it is practical. It works but you just cannot compare it to a standard ironing board that is specifically designed for just a single purpose. Alternatively, you can opt for a tabletop ironing board or a handheld fabric steamer that enables you to do away with an ironing board completely.
