This is one of Rowenta irons that come with bells and whistles. It is a little expensive for a small appliance for the laundry room but it is still not the most expensive yet in the company’s range of ironing products. The Rowenta DW9080 Steamium iron looks like a good quality appliance with a sleek design but is it really worth our attention? In this review, we will try to explore this particular model in further detail.
Rowenta DW9080 Review
The Rowenta DW9080 Steamium has the following main selling points:
- 1800-watt
- Platinum soleplate
- Precision tip
- One touch steam and temperature setting
- LED display
- Anti-drip
- Steam jet
- Steam on demand
- Vertical steaming
- Adjustable steam
- Spray mist
- Anti-calcium system
- Auto off
- Size: 112⁄5 x 5 x 6 inches
This Rowenta iron is an 1800-watt appliance with a platinum soleplate whereby it is coated with an ultra-thin silicate coating for a tougher and smoother surface. This gives stronger scratch-resistant and nonstick properties to make ironing easier. On the precision tip soleplate are 400 micro steam holes for better steam diffusion, similar to the Rowenta DW5080 Focus.
While most of the features like vertical steaming, steam jet and spray mist are pretty standard for any steam iron, the Steamium also has a few unique selling points. The first is the LED display which is not commonly found on cheaper irons. The Black & Decker 2030 also has a digital display but for the Rowenta DW9080, it combines it with a one-touch steam and temperature selector. This means you do not have to guess the amount of steam that you need for different types of fabrics – it is automatically adjusted when you select your fabric using the thermostat below the handle. The LED display at the top front of the handle will indicate to you your selection, making the settings easy to read.
The second unique feature is the continuous steam trigger on the underside of the handle. This is the steam on demand feature whereby pressing the trigger will activate steam output while you are ironing. The benefit of this feature is that you get to control when to release steam and avoid continuous steaming when none is needed, saving water and energy in the process.
The third special feature is the advanced steam force technology that forces steam into fabrics using pump injection. Basically, this pushes an extra 30% steam into the materials you are pressing to get rid of wrinkles much faster and easier.
The unit also has a self-cleaning button and anti-calcium feature to remove impurities and automatic shut off for safety. The cord length of the Rowenta DW9080 is 7 feet and pivots 360 degrees. The weight of the DW9080 is about 3.7 lbs and has a 10.8-ounce water tank.
Rowenta DW9080 Vs DW9081
As far as we can see, there is not much difference between these two models except for the soleplate. The DW9080 has a platinum coated soleplate while the DW9081 is purely stainless steel. Prices do fluctuate and there can be a big difference between the two at times. So, check both out before you buy.
Rowenta DW9080 Vs DW8080
The DW8080 is a 1700-watt iron compared to the DW9080 which is 1800-watt. It has a stainless steel soleplate. The iron doesn’t the sophistication of the Steamium as there is no LED display and steam on demand function. There is also no steam force technology for that extra steam. But it has a larger water tank at 12.7-ounce. Give that the DW8080 Pro Master iron has fewer features, it also has a much lower selling price.
Rowenta DW9080 Vs DW9280
The DW9280 Steam Focus iron is a step up to the DW9080. It has a few extra features not available on the DW9080 such as a Ready Temp LED display to let you know when the iron is ready for use and a higher burst of steam at 220gram/minute. There is also a precision shot of steam on the tip of the soleplate and a smart steam motion sensor to conserve water and power.
Should You Buy The Rowenta DW9080 Steamium Steam Iron?
Pros
- Steams very well – The micro steam holes and steam force technology really makes it easy to get rid of creases on your clothes. Ample steam production means you get most wrinkles out with one swipe which helps to cut down on ironing time.
- Large water tank – The reservoir is not the largest in the market but enough to last you through 3 to 4 shirts with the amount of steam that it produces. Many irons take in less than 10 ounces of water with the Panasonic NI-E300TR managing only about 7 ounces but it is definitely a lighter iron.
- More control on steam output – The steam on demand gives you more control of when to activate steam production. The trigger is conveniently located where your fingers can easily grip the button when you grasp the handle. This means you can give it a squeeze whenever more steam is needed as you iron.
- Settings is clear – The LED display is at the forefront of the iron. This makes it easy to see the setting the iron is running on. Most other models would require you to check the dial underneath the handle for the settings which is a hassle.
- German-made – While it doesn’t guarantee that your unit would be durable, there is still a premium to be paid for having your iron made in Germany. Out of the box, the iron certainly feels to be well-made and solid.
Cons
- Not durable – Customer complaints of the iron leaking water, not heating up well and dial broken within weeks to 2 years of use are well-documented. For the price, buyers certainly expect a longer lasting appliance notwithstanding the fact that it is a great iron when it is new.
- Steam control trigger – While some people like it, others don’t find it to be a good design. Because you need to squeeze the trigger each time you want to force out more steam, it can be tiring on your hands if you have a lot to iron.
- Heavy – The Rowenta DW9080 weighs 3.7 lbs thereabouts without water. Fill it to the maximum and it will be much heavier. If you are doing a lot of vertical steaming, you might like a lighter iron for a change although a heavier iron will provide more pressure on the clothes when pressing. As a comparison, the Sunbeam Steam Master weighs slightly less than 3 lbs.
Many people swear by Rowenta while others think the quality has deteriorated drastically. So, it is indeed hard to make a judgment call on the Rowenta DW9080 Steamium steam iron. Based on the features and how well it irons, we would think this is a good buy. You just cannot compare its performance to a $50 iron with the way it erases away the wrinkles.

Good review. I suspect that there is a leaking problem the Rowenta 9000 series irons. If you have time maybe you could look inti this.

I have a Rowenta steam force. I LOVE it and I don’t LOVE it. It does peak water. I have had 3 different Rowentas and they all peak and quit working after a year or so. I also have the oliso pro smart iron. It doesn’t peak as much, but I have had it about a year and it stopped working about a week ago. I can’t find my receipt . I will only buy either one with an extended warranty or from a store with a good return policy. Such as bed bath and beyond. Both are great when they work.

I use my iron once a week. My iron isn’t old, but beyond the warranty expiration date. After ironing yesterday, I put it down to cool and it started leaking all over the coffee table and dripping onto my new wood floor. Thank God I saw it and dried the floor. I am beyond upset. I expect much more from an expensive iron. My old cheap ones performed much longer than this one.
