Ironing is boring and tiring. It is a chore that you want to get it over and done with quickly. One way to let time flies and get the job finished without feeling too dreadful is to do something else while you are ironing. While you can’t focus on anything else for some household chores, ironing is a little different. For example, you can’t watch TV while you are vacuuming because you will be moving around. But you will be standing at one spot while ironing and this allows you to look at the screen and watch your favorite show or the news. This is one redeeming quality of this hateful chore. At least, there is something else you can do as you go through your pile of clothes. So, what else can you do while ironing?
Ideas On What To Do While Ironing
Watch TV
As mentioned above, just drag your ironing board right in front of the TV and turn it on to watch your favorite program. As you get engrossed in the show, you will naturally forget the pain of the task at hand.
Listen To Music
This is another common method to alleviate the boredom of this task. If you can’t watch TV because all you have is a wall-mounted ironing board that is a distance away, listening to music is a good substitute. Moreover, with everyone owning a smartphone or an iPod nowadays, you will always have music to listen to wherever you are.
Listen To The Radio
This is an alternative to music. If you don’t have anything downloaded onto your devices, just turn on the radio. At least, there is something else to occupy your mind too as you iron.
Sing
Just like how you would sing in the shower, just sing your favorite songs while you are ironing. You don’t need any music to sing a song if you don’t have a radio or smartphone nearby. Just sing what comes to mind. Singing can release stress too apart from diverting attention from a mindless chore.
Listen To An Audio Book
I think this is great for those who like to read but has little time to do so. Many books now have an audio version. Play that and get engrossed in the story. Then, the chore will not seem like a waste of time.
Call Someone
If you have someone you need or can talk to at that particular time, call them and have a chat. You can use a Bluetooth headset or just turn on your cell phone to speaker mode. As you chat, the time will just fly away while you are ironing.
Meditate
You will never think this is possible but meditation can be done anywhere, anytime. If you are feeling truly frustrated with housework, try meditating while doing it. Through practice, you will get calmer and increase your ability to concentrate on the task at hand. Thus, you will be able to complete it faster and do it better. This is also not restricted to ironing and household chores alone. Meditation will bring benefits to other aspects of your daily life too.
Make A Mental List
You don’t have to concentrate on the negative feelings that ironing automatically brings forth in you. Think of something else as you iron your clothes. Come up with a to-do list or a grocery list in your mind. This is what I do at times. Pick something practical to concentrate on mentally and the ironing will seem more bearable.
Do You Have Other Ideas?
If you have other ideas on what to do while ironing, share them in the comments section. I would love to hear from you. Personally, I listen to music a lot while ironing. I also watch the TV at times but I find it hard to concentrate when I do that though. I like to finish the chore quickly and hence, the concentration needs to be there. So, if I turn on the TV, I get distracted easily and the ironing time stretches. However, different people have different coping mechanisms. Some will find watching TV relaxing instead of distracting while ironing.
The bottom line is you can have the best steam iron and the best ironing board to make ironing a little easier. But you will still need to do something else while you iron your clothes to take away the boredom and dreadfulness of this chore, whatever it may be.
